Avner received his Ph.D. in Animal Sciences from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel, in 2004. Between 2003-2006 he did his post-doc in The Hubbard Center for Genome Studies, University of New Hampshire, in the lab of Prof. Tom Kocher, and in 2006-2007 a post-doc in the Dept. of Fisheries and Wildlife Sciences, Virginia Tech, in the lab of Prof. Eric Hallerman. Since 2008 he is a senior scientist at the Dept. of Poultry and Aquaculture, Institute of Animal Sciences, Agricultural Research Organization - Volcani Institute. Between 2014-2020 he served as the head of the Department of Poultry and Aquaculture, and since 2023 he is the head of the Institute of Animal Sciences.
Avner research areas are physiology and genetics of fitness traits in cultured fish species, focusing mainly on understanding the biological basis of environmental stress response and adaptation, using comparative physiology, genetics, and genomicsapproaches to study genes and pathways involved in osmotic and thermal stress. He is engaged in national and international scientific research, with collaborative projects in the USA and the UK.
