Dr Serena Teo is Deputy Director (Research) and Principal Research Fellow at the Tropical Marine Science Institute of the National University of Singapore (NUS). Dr Teo is a marine biologist with over 30 years research in Singapore's marine ecosystems. She obtained her BSc (Hons) in Zoology (1988) from NUS, and a PhD in Marine Biology (1992) from Swansea University Wales, UK. Her research interests lie in understanding the influence of anthropogenic activities on the marine environment. Her research is multi-disciplinary, covering biodiversity conservation, biosecurity, biofouling management and urban ecology. With respect to aquaculture, Dr Teo has special interest in sustainable marine food production. Dr Teo was Facility Director for the St John's Island National Marine Laboratory (SJINML) from 2016 to 2023. As SJINML Resident Scientist, she oversees the research laboratories including the marine lab's fish research aquaria.
